Ben’s Top Tips for Getting Your Car Ready for Snow and Ice
We still have a couple of colder months to get through before things properly warm up. This is often when ice and snow catch people out the most, when it feels like winter should be behind us but the roads tell a different story. It is also the time of year when people really notice how their car handles in colder conditions. Here are Ben’s three simple, practical tips to help you stay safer on the road.
1. Think About Your Tyres
Most drivers don’t realise that standard tyres are designed to work best above 7 degrees. Once temperatures fall below that, the rubber hardens and grip reduces, even if there is no snow on the road.
Winter tyres are specifically designed for temperatures below 7 degrees. They are not just for heavy snowfall. They improve grip, braking performance and control in general cold weather.
If swapping to winter tyres is not practical, all season tyres are a sensible alternative. They are designed to cope with a wider range of conditions without needing to change them twice a year.
2. Clear All Snow and Ice Before Driving
Before heading out, make sure the whole car is clear, not just the glass in front of you. It only takes a few extra minutes and it makes a big difference once you are on the road. Snow left on the roof can slide forward when you brake and completely block your view. It can also fall onto the car behind you.
Before setting off:
- Clear the roof, bonnet and boot using a soft brush
- Fully de-ice every window and mirror
- Clear headlights and number plates
3. Plan Your Route
Before you set off driving in snow, plan your route and think about the possible conditions ahead.
Consider any risk areas along the way, check local traffic reports, and stick to main roads and bus routes where you can, as these are usually cleared and gritted first.
A bit of planning before you leave can make the journey much more straightforward.
Thinking About Changing Your Car?
If your drive never quite feels as confident as you would like when the weather turns cold, it might simply not be the right car for you.
Some cars cope better in winter conditions. Features like all wheel drive, good traction control and heated mirrors can make day-to-day driving feel much easier.
